The Poncha originates from Câmara de Lobos but as time passes this drink has become emblematic throughout the island and is known as a regional drink.

According to historians, the Poncha comes from India, (Panch is the Indian name). It is thought that the Poncha has been prepared for the first time outside their Country Christmas in the Pearl of the Atlantic (Madeira), in the eighteenth century by the suggestion of the British, due to their assiduous travel between the island and its Lands .
The Poncha was formerly drink "to heat" and also to help cure colds and flu.

This drink is prepared with a wooden utensil and that there is Madeira house that does not have the famous "caralhinho", this instrument is also known as the stick of Poncha or mexelote.
